A good HOWTO here for ubuntu 7.10

The only extra step I had to do was enable the source repository to be able to retrieve the ffmpeg source. i.e.
sudo apt-get source ffmpeg

For Windows users,

these files and instructions were quite useful to me.

Note that, with Easy-php, I also had to copy the 2 extra dlls of the "all dlls" zip file (pthreadGC2.dll and avutil-49.dll) to my apache/bin folder.
